The Consumer Technology Association is leading an effort to standardize unmanned aircraft serial numbers to make it easier to identify specific aircraft. The idea here is to enable a computer app
to scan an aircraft serial number and automatically populate the registration file with make, model and serial number without anyone having to manually enter the number into the system. Google and
Parrot are partners in this initiative. This might not be glamorous work, but it’s an important part of our work to safely integrate drones.

I found this tidbit on creating a standardized serial number (aka reinventing the bar code) to be the most interesting thing in his remarks. No word as to when and how the reg system would be updated to incorporate this information, or when it would become mandatory since at present there is no requirement to capture this information. The full text of his remarks is here and includes a full roundup of all FAA
drone-related initiatives.
